"A date which will live in infamy"

"With confidence in our armed forces - with the unbounding determination of our People - we will gain the inevitable triumph - so help us God.

I ask that the Congress declare that since the unprovoked and dastardly attack by Japan on Sunday, December 7, 1941 a state of War has existed between the United States and the Japanese empire." --President Franklin D. Roosevelt, December 8, 1941.

Today is the 71st anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor. My heart is heavy as I think of the men and women who lost their lives on that day. I think of their families listening to the news hoping and praying that their son, daughter, sister, brother, orfriend might be spared.

The surprise Japanese attack that drew the U.S. into World War II ended after only 30 minutes. Thousands of men and women were killed, hundreds of aircraft destroyed, and 21 ships sunk, or damaged.

I hope that we can all take a moment today to remember and give thanks to God, military members, and their families for the great sacrifices made to ensure our freedom.
